The building of Clontubrid N.S. was begun in 1930, and the school opened in 1932. The school consisted of one large room, partitioned to form two classrooms. There was a shed attached to the rear of the building and separate, outside toilets. The building remained largely unchanged until 1982, when the partition was removed, making the building a single classroom. A pre-fabricated classroom was added. In 1986, with increasing enrolment, a second assistant teacher was appointed and a second pre-fabricated classroom was erected. The first phase of a major renovation of the school was completed for September 1988. This included the demolition of the outside toilets and shed, the erection of a new toilet block attached to the main building. The extension also incorporated a staffroom. A new bore was drilled to provide, for the first time, a potable water supply. The playground was drained, a play shelter built and tarmacadam yard laid. In 1990, as part of further renovations, there was an exchange of property with Mr. Paddy Bergin, to provide a larger playground.Now this is not how I recall that going down! I was in school there from 1979 to 1983 and there had long been two teachers and there were two classrooms (I don't remember there being a 'first' assistant teacher). Hah I notice they got rid of the outside toilets AFTER we left. And we didn't have a water supply...can you imagine trying that on nowadays?
...actually you know maybe I do remember a prefab? It was up on the hill to the left? Am I imagining that? Was that why we all got set on scrubbing the place down and getting rid of graffiti? And come to think of it did anyone else find themselves in a succession of schools where you got set on to clean and paint (and on occasion chop down ivy with the world's bluntest axe) or is it just me?
My memory aint what it used to be.

Here are two paris of thongs. The smaller one was used for taking clothes out of a laundry. The larger one was used for pulling thistles.

The first assistant teacher was Mrs Doheny, Mr Doheny was the Principal. There were two classrooms only because of the folding divider between the two halves of the room. What alarmed me was the fact that all the electrics - very ancient fuse box, etc - were over the main and only access/exit door.
OK, go to google maps street view and look at the front of the school... Changed a bit. A few thoughts..
1. if memory serves the little annex attached directly to the old building wasn't there. There was a gap and an older standard prefab was approx where the new one is, only 180 degrees around.
2. Big play area now.
3. It has a satellite dish. This is a school that didn't have running water and it now has satellite (poss broadband).
4. if you pan 180 deg to the right (towards the crossroads) on other side of the road leading to the church (behind the stone wall) there is an outside broadcasting van. Why in the name of all thats holy would an OBU be in Clontubrid...
In the previous comment, both ref to 180 degrees should read 90 degrees. Sigh.
And yes, the mark in the bridge is just about still there on Street View.

I can't find the broadcasting van but there is a mysterious disappearing car on the junction depending on which angle you look at the crossroads.
Claisdara (now lacking both) has gained a round window...
Don't get you mother started on how that house came to have a rebuild at the front....

How do you know the story about a round window? I know the story about how the Clais and the Dara were required to be removed.
Not long after we left there was a mysterious fire that burned out just the front extension of the building. It just happened to remove the front room (which, granted, was a bit small)and allowed for the rebuilding of a larger room. Well now, there's a coincidence.
