Playing with my new camera

It is too cold (and dark) to go outside and fiddle around with F-stops so here are some still-lifes. I tried to focus on small areas and have the rest of the shot softer, seems to have worked reasonably well.
In the first picture the focus is on the beads and in the second on the red bow:

Possibly if I need to explain where the focus is I am doing something wrong...
